Medications & Supplements

  • Laryngeal paralysis is probably more common than generally recognised. It affects middle aged and older dogs, usually of medium and large size.

  • Levothyroxine (also called Thyroxine) is used to treat low thyroid levels. This medication belongs to the general group of medicines called hormones.

  • Liquid paraffin is a laxative used for the treatment of constipation. Paraffin in the form of a paste is used for control of 'fur balls/hair balls' in cats.

  • The liver is a vital, complex organ which performs a number of crucial functions, principally involved with metabolism and is sometimes termed the "factory of the body" which controls many of the chemical processes necessary for normal bodily function.

  • Lufenuron is prescribed for the control of fleas. It can also help in control of allergic skin disorders caused by fleas (flea allergy dermatitis).

  • Follow your vet's advice and instructions very precisely. Take your cat for reinspection if requested to do so. If your cat's condition worsens unexpectedly then contact your vet for advice.

  • Maropitant is an anti-emetic (stops vomiting). Your veterinary surgeon may prescribe maropitant to stop vomiting due to gastritis, chemotherapy and also travel sickness.

  • Medicine may come in several formulations. It is important that your cat receives the prescribed medication.

  • Megestrol acetate is a progestogen used to prevent and postpone oestrus (heat).

  • Meloxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent used to relieve pain and inflammation. Your veterinarian may prescribe meloxicam to reduce pain in arthritis.
